What should I do if I take over someone else’s bad project? [Copy link]

Here's the thing. I graduated from college this year and recently joined a company as a hardware engineer. When I joined this company, they didn't give me any technical training, nor did they have any handover documents. They just sent me a bunch of schematics and development board information. These days, they asked me to do a project based on a project they did a long time ago. What a shame, the schematics and PCBs they gave me don't correspond. In other words, there are many circuits on the schematic that are useless and not on the PCB. On the other hand, there are also some devices on the PCB that are not on the schematics. I asked them and found out that some things were added directly to the PCB, and they were not drawn on the schematics because they were in a hurry. What's more ridiculous is that they have been talking about everything verbally, and they have not been able to explain the functional requirements of the board clearly. What should I do?

You get paid to work, and you get paid to curse your mother after get off work. If you are so delicate, what do you think those who play PCB reverse engineering and make schematics will think?

What is delicate? If you think this is normal, are you still a normal person? As for the PCB reverse engineering schematic, it is just a low-end knockoff product.  Details Published on 2018-10-26 23:20

It depends on your own positioning. If you want to do things well and be a good employee, you should analyze the PCB in depth after analyzing the schematic diagram, and finally get a complete set of materials. If you just want to spend your days, proceed according to the original formula, get a finished product + a brief analysis function of the schematic diagram, and proceed according to the established goals. Of course, you are too angry. Although many companies now know that they manage projects strictly in accordance with project management specifications, they are often not allowed to redo requirements, plans, or even organize complete materials due to time and cost constraints. To put it bluntly, there is no version control. Just like when I was making circuit boards before, I found some defects when I tested the physical objects. Sometimes the simplest way is to modify the board on site! Jumpers and components crossing are normal. You can go to Taobao to search for some cheap electronic products. Many of them have design flaws and cannot be perfect products, so they just make some jumpers on the products, add a few components and then reduce the price. Therefore, your project may have a similar situation. Finally, after the schematic is drawn, it is also possible to modify the PCB directly after drawing it. The purpose is to save costs, ensure quality, and achieve the established goals. As for whether the schematic should be revised and improved again, that is a requirement in principle. Maybe my project is about to be completed and I won’t resign... ... Long live understanding!

This is normal, you are just surprised. If you can't do it, it means you have the opportunity to grow. It's just that fresh graduates don't bother to master this kind of brick-moving skill. If you are unhappy, you can resign. I said too much.  Details Published on 2018-10-27 07:46

This is too normal, you are just surprised by it. Not being able to do it just means there is an opportunity for growth, but college graduates just disdain to master this kind of brick-moving skills. If you are unhappy, you can resign. I said too much.

This is what happened. My colleague made this about a year ago, and now they want to rehash it. As a result, my colleague, the product manager, and the structure team have been discussing how to do it and what to add, but no one knows the status of the entire project, so now we are like a blind man groping in the dark.  Details Published on 2018-10-27 11:43

This is the norm for many small companies, so why do people say that you should go to a big company after graduation? Because there won’t be similar pitfalls.

You are still young. Young people should have this spirit: Either take the company public or go bankrupt.

First map the circuit, compare it with the original circuit diagram, figure out what has been changed, why it has been changed, whether the change is correct, and then consider how you will respond.

If you just wait, rely on, and ask for things, then what is the value of your existence? To think clearly, newcomers in the workplace must first learn how to work.

That is what you need to figure out, otherwise you will just become one of those mediocre people. At present, you can only be called a "candidate". Whether you can really make it depends on your professional attitude.  Details Published on 2018-10-28 14:18

This phenomenon is quite common in small companies that are not standardized. You can try to understand the function and principle of the product first. Only when you understand the working principle can you develop it later. If you can't ask others for help, you have to rely on yourself. Try to do it first, and if you can't do it, then withdraw. There are many unreasonable and unscientific things. That's it. Hurry up and work hard to accumulate experience. There are not so many wonderful projects waiting for you.

It is indeed the norm for small companies. Don't worry about schematics, PCB, and other old things. After all, you have to start from scratch. The previous schematics and PCB diagrams are just your information, which is much better than collecting them on the Internet. First sort out your thoughts and find out what the purpose of the project requires. Then, make a comprehensive analysis and proceed according to your own ideas. Of course, you must consult with your supervisor and seek support for your plan. If it works, do it. If not, forget it.
