Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced two new USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (PD) controllers with fully integrated power paths that simplify design, minimize solution size and accelerate time to market. The TPS65987D and TPS65988 offer system designers TI's highest level of integration, reducing design complexity and total cost. These two devices are the first USB PD controllers capable of delivering 100W and 200W of power, respectively, to support computing applications and enable the benefits of USB Type-C in other applications such as cordless power tools, gaming and virtual reality headsets. The TPS65987D is a single-port device that delivers 100W of power and integrates independent 20-V, 5-A source and sink load switches. With low RDS(on) (25mΩ) and reverse current protection, the TPS65987D provides a comprehensive solution for managing port charging needs. The dual-port TPS65988 can deliver 200W of power, along with two integrated 5-A bidirectional load switches and external power path control to simultaneously deliver 5-A of power.
Key Features and Benefits of TPS65987D and TPS65988 Fewer Components, Simpler Design: Compared to discrete implementations that typically require 18 external power path components, the fully integrated USB PD controller helps designers reduce design complexity. In addition, the new controllers offer integrated reverse current protection for multiple power paths to further save board space and protect the system and controller from overcurrent. Industry's Highest Power Levels 200W of power enables fast USB Type-C charging, and two integrated 5-A field-effect transistor (FET) paths enable it to support high-power applications such as laptops, docking stations or connected peripherals, while maintaining low RDS(on) for efficient charging with minimal power consumption. Simple Configuration No firmware development is required, as each device is preconfigured for the most common use cases, making selection and implementation quick and easy. TI's USB Type-C Advantage As a founding member of the USB Developer Forum, TI has a 20-year history of releasing high-performance USB-compliant products. TI provides designers with unmatched resources and expertise, including hardware design examples, the Texas Instruments Online Support Community and training content. Packaging and Availability Both devices are available now from the TI store and authorized distributors in a 7-mm-by-7-mm split-pad, quad flat no-lead (QFN) package.
