In today's new electronic systems, there is an increasing need for power conversion circuits that do more than just convert one voltage to another. Some systems require a constant current, constant voltage output, while others may require a limit on the maximum current that can be drawn from the input. Still other systems may require the power conversion chip to be interfaced with a microcontroller so that other parameters can be measured and controlled. All these are in addition to the standard requirements of very high conversion efficiency and high operating voltage range.
Linear Technology's LT®8705 is a buck-boost controller IC with 4 regulation loops that can operate with input voltages up to 80V and generate an output voltage up to 80V. The LT8705 can operate with input voltages above, equal to, or below the desired output voltage while achieving conversion efficiencies of over 98%. The device smoothly transitions from the buck region to the buck-boost region to the boost region as the relationship between input and output voltages changes. The powerful integrated gate driver allows a single LT8705 circuit to handle up to 250W of power.
LT8705 has 4 built-in regulation loops. These loops can be programmed to regulate output voltage, output current, input current, and input voltage. Any combination of these loops can be used in a given system. Status pins can be used to indicate which loop or loops are running at a given moment. Additionally, the LT8705 includes an internal linear regulator that can be used to power other loads, such as a microcontroller. Watch the video to learn more.
