UL certification - uninterruptible power supply system ul1778 certification scope:
Uninterruptible Power Supply System: UPS is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), which is an uninterruptible power supply with energy storage device. It is mainly used to provide uninterruptible power supply to some equipment with high requirements on power supply stability.
When the mains input is normal, the UPS stabilizes the mains and supplies it to the load. At this time, the UPS is an AC voltage stabilizer, and it also charges the battery inside the machine. When the mains power is interrupted (power outage), the UPS immediately switches the DC power of the battery to the load through the inverter to continue to supply 220V AC power to the load, so that the load maintains normal operation and protects the load software and hardware from damage. UPS equipment usually provides protection against overvoltage or undervoltage.
2.1.1 Equipment covered by UL1778
UL1778 standard applies to uninterruptible power systems (UPS). The main function of UPS in this standard is to ensure the continuity of AC power. Uninterruptible power systems can also improve the quality of power by keeping the power within the specified characteristic range. This standard applies to mobile, fixed and built-in UPS for distribution systems up to 600V AC. This equipment is designed to comply with the requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code Part I CSA C22.1 or the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70 and, unless otherwise specified, is installed in accordance with the following standards for the protection of electronic computer data processing equipment, ANSI/NFPA75.
The UL 1778 standard specifies requirements designed to ensure the safety of operators and especially maintenance personnel.
The UL1778 standard is intended to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock or personal injury from equipment installed as a single device or a system of interconnected devices when the equipment is installed, operated and maintained in the manner specified by the manufacturer.
2.1.2 Other requirements
In addition to the requirements of the UL1778 standard, the UPS shall also comply with the relevant requirements of CAN/CSA-C22.2 NO.60950-1/UL60950-1 (March 2007, Second Edition, Information Technology Equipment - Safety). Part 1: General Requirements (RD) applies to the countries/regions where the product will be used. If there is a conflict between the requirements of the UL1778 standard and the RD, the requirements of this standard shall prevail.
Engine driven DC generators designed to provide backup power to battery powered circuits of a UPS. These devices are investigated for compliance with the requirements of UL 2200 and CSAC 22.2 No. 100.
Whenever hospital-grade components used in a UPS are identified by a “Hospital Grade Only” mark, or have a green dot on the body of the component, or imply that it is suitable for medical use, they shall be evaluated in accordance with the requirements of this standard and CAN/CSA-C22 No. 2 60601-1/UL60601-1.
For equipment that may be exposed to water, additional requirements beyond those specified in this standard may be required; guidance on such requirements and related tests is given in Annex LLL and Annex T/RD.
2.1.3 Excluded items
These requirements do not include UPS equipment used as a legally required backup system as described in the National Electrical Code 701/ANSI/NFPA70, and emergency power supplies as described in the Canadian Electrical Code Part I, CSA C22, Section 46. 1. See Annex LLL.
Where considered appropriate, required revisions will be proposed and adopted in accordance with the methods for specifying, revising and implementing this standard.
NOTE 1: For equipment subject to transient overvoltages exceeding Category II of IEC 60664, additional protection may be required. Such additional protection may be located in the AC supply of the equipment or in the equipment as an integral design of the equipment.
NOTE 2: If additional protection is part of the equipment insulation requirements, the creepage distances and electrical clearances from the mains to the load side of the additional protection can be judged as Class III or Class IV as required. All insulation requirements, creepage distances and electrical clearances on the load side of the additional protection device can be judged as Class I or Class II as required.
2.1.4 Other applications
The UL1778 standard does not cover all types of UPS, but it can serve as a guide for such equipment. In some cases, for certain specific applications, in addition to the requirements specified in the UL1778 standard, other requirements are also necessary.
a: Equipment operating under conditions exposed to extreme temperatures, such as: excessive dust, moisture or vibration; flammable gases or corrosive or explosive atmospheres.
b: UPS equipment based on rotating machinery;
c: UPS equipment that complies with the emergency lighting and power requirements specified in UL924: and central power systems described in CSA C22.2 NO 141-10.
