Recently, there is news that Japanese company Sony will start purchasing QD-OLED TV panels from Samsung Display as early as November. Sony's move will break LGD's monopoly on the global OLED TV panel supply.

Industry insiders revealed that as early as last year, Sony has been studying the feasibility of commercializing Samsung Display's QD-OLED samples, and is preparing to issue a certification containing QD-OLED specifications to Samsung Display in the near future.

Rong Chaoping, senior research manager of Avio, told the China Electronics News that in fact, Sony, Samsung Electronics and China's leading TV manufacturers will adopt QD-OLED panels. At present, the high-end market already has relatively mature WOLED TVs. With the continuous upgrading of brand product positioning, more high-end technologies such as QD-OLED are needed to improve the product line.

"The participation of international brands such as Sony and Samsung Electronics will help QD-OLED panels penetrate the market, and WOLED and QD-OLED will develop in parallel in the future," said Rong Chaoping. It is understood that WOLED is a white light source, while QD-OLED is a panel composed of light-emitting elements that emit blue light with quantum dot color filters coated on it. WOLED technology is becoming more and more mature, but its scale expansion is still constrained by huge capital requirements; QD-OLED is more expensive and has greater challenges in the process.

It is reported that Samsung Display Co., Ltd. (SDC) is strategically shifting its panel industry focus to QD-OLED, and the supply of QD-OLED panels will continue to increase in the future. Industry insiders have previously revealed that Samsung will start mass production of QD-OLED panels in the fourth quarter of this year.

It is worth noting that before Samsung mass-produced QD-OLED, LGD supplied about 99% of the world's OLED TV panels. However, there are differences in the technical routes of Samsung Display and LGD, the former is QD-OLED and the latter is WOLED.

Rong Chaoping told the China Electronics News reporter that for the OLED industry, on the one hand, the mass production of Samsung's QD-OLED panels will be able to expand the OLED industry's team and will play a positive publicity role for the OLED industry chain; on the other hand, it breaks the monopoly of LGD in the supply of OLED panels, and QD-OLED panels will also squeeze the market share of WOLED panels in the high-end market.
