On Sunday local time in the United States, electric car maker Tesla announced that it had achieved a new milestone, with the number of its supercharging stations worldwide reaching 20,000.

Tesla has made several promises over the past few years about expanding its Supercharger network, but has never been able to deliver on them. The delays appear to be related in part to the deployment of the next-generation Supercharger V3 technology, which itself has seen several delays.

In 2019, Tesla finally launched Supercharger V3 and began to deploy it around the world. As of the end of last year, Tesla had installed more than 15,000 Superchargers at 1,716 locations around the world. Data from September showed that the number of its Superchargers was about 17,500.

On October 21, in its recently released third-quarter earnings report, Tesla noted that the company has 19,437 Superchargers. On November 8, Tesla officially announced that it has more than 2,181 Supercharger stations worldwide, with the number of Superchargers reaching 20,000 and still increasing.

The accelerated deployment of Superchargers is important as Tesla tries to keep its infrastructure serviceable as the company is currently achieving record electric vehicle deliveries. The Supercharger V3 has a higher charging output, which reduces the time spent on each charge.

In addition to its network of Superchargers that can provide fast charging for long journeys, Tesla is also expanding its Destination Charging network to allow for slower charging at night at hotels and other destinations.
