According to multiple foreign media sources, Oracle is now shutting down its flash storage division and laying off at least 300 employees.

On August 15, Mike Workman, senior vice president of Oracle's storage division, informed employees of the massive layoffs via a conference call.

A laid-off mid-level Oracle employee said: "Today, Larry's outdated storage department Pillar Data has been quietly cut and its products have been discontinued. A few people were left behind to see the product off on its last leg."

He estimated that "about 300 people" were laid off.

News of the layoffs also reached thelayoff.com, a layoff announcement website, and many now former employees confirmed the changes. One claimed that all but 12 people on Workman's organizational chart were removed, "effectively the entire flash storage department was cut. Only 12 people remained. Over 400 people were laid off."

Pillar Data, led by Workman and funded by then-Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, was acquired by Oracle in 2011. It then became part of Oracle's flash storage unit, based in Broomfield, Colorado, which employed about 2,000 people last year.

Oracle's flash storage products include FS1, a redesigned Pillar Axiom array. The hardware is integrated into the Oracle system, and the components of the system are designed and built together with Oracle software, and have been fully integrated, tested and optimized to work together to achieve better Oracle database performance.

Engineered systems (all-in-one systems) include Exadata Database Machine, Big Data Appliance, Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance, Private Cloud Appliance and Database Appliance. Exadata Database Machine X8 was announced in June.

Oracle is now focusing on its public cloud business and paying less attention to on-premises deployment of its software, and therefore hardware. Now it looks like Oracle is stopping making its own flash storage hardware and software.

An Oracle spokeswoman sent us a statement: "As our cloud business grows, we will continually balance resources and restructure our development teams to help ensure we have the right people to deliver the best cloud products to our customers around the world."
