According to U.S. government documents, the U.S. Department of Commerce has agreed to a request from electric car giant Tesla to exempt it from a 10% tariff on aluminum imports from Japan.
According to Reuters, the aluminum exempted from the tariffs is made by Nippon Light Metal Co Ltd, and Tesla requested a tariff exemption of 10,000 tons per year. The imported aluminum is used to produce electric vehicle batteries at Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada, the United States.
The U.S. Department of Commerce has agreed to a one-year exemption and pointed out in a document released on June 5 that the recent U.S. aluminum output is not sufficient and the quality is not satisfactory. This is also the main reason why the U.S. government agreed to the exemption of import tariffs on battery aluminum.
The battery pack is the energy source and energy storage product of Tesla Model 3. Tesla pointed out in the application that it is the only American manufacturer producing this type of battery, and its production scale is expected to expand exponentially in the next few years.
Tesla previously requested exemptions from tariffs on Chinese-made parts, including the Model 3's computer and autopilot control system, from the U.S. Trade Representative, but the request was rejected.
