There are already some wearable devices for swimming tracking, such as smartwatches that track basic stats. Toronto-based TritonWear is taking it a step further and has just announced the Triton 2 - a device that tracks 13 swimming metrics simultaneously, transmitting data in real time for performance analysis.
The waterproof Triton 2 device itself hides behind the wearer's swim cap and pairs with a coach's smartphone or tablet. Once the wearer begins swimming, the device's inertial measurement unit (an accelerometer/gyroscope combo) continues to track data such as stroke type, average speed, stroke count/rate, stroke length, underwater time, and breaths.
All of this data is wirelessly transmitted to an iOS/Android app on the coach’s mobile device. Not only do these apps record and display the data, but it’s also processed by AI-based algorithms that were developed with the help of elite-level coaches. As a result, the app is able to provide feedback on the swimmer’s performance – this includes suggestions on how they can improve, and what they should do to avoid injury.
Additionally, if a coach uses their mobile device to take a video of a swimmer, that video will be synced with the recorded performance analysis when played back. This means swimmers will be able to really see where they are falling short. The system can also be used offline, but once connected to the internet, the data recorded by the app can be synced to a server.
The Triton 2 is available now for $149 per year. The video motion analysis feature costs an additional $39 per year. A similar crowdfunded device, the SwimBot, does not appear to have made it to production yet.
The Triton 2 is the successor to the previously released product. According to its makers, the new version is 60% smaller, 70% lighter, has four times longer battery life, and has a more precise sensor.
