Recently, Volvo Cars said that it will launch a joint research project called CED (Continuous Electric Drive) and start converting a Volvo C30 electric car for inductive charging. It is reported that after using inductive charging technology, electric vehicles will no longer need power sockets or charging cables, and can be charged directly from the road.

In the inductive charging system, the charging plate is buried underground. The charging plate is composed of coils that can generate electromagnetic fields. When the car is parked on the charging plate, the electrical energy is transmitted directly from the charging plate to the car's inductive receiver in the form of alternating current, and then converted into direct current in the voltage converter inside the car to charge the car's battery pack. Its advanced feature is that the entire charging process does not require direct contact between the car and the charging plate.

Volvo said that if the inductive charging system can be successfully developed, it will greatly reduce the charging time. Taking the Volvo C30 electric car as an example, when the battery is fully discharged, it is estimated that it will only take one hour and twenty minutes to fully charge the 24 kWh battery pack. It is reported that Volvo has already started to develop inductive charging technology. Will this system be applied to the C30 electric car launched in 2013? Let us wait and see.
