On May 7, 2024, Shanghai Jinmai Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. ("Jinmai") launched another masterpiece in the field of smart cockpits: the smart electronic exterior rearview mirror (CMS) solution. This solution replaces the traditional exterior rearview mirrors of cars with "exterior high-definition cameras + interior electronic screens", fundamentally solving the pain points of traditional physical mirrors such as wind resistance and large blind spots, poor vision at night and in rainy and snowy weather, bringing a new smart cockpit experience and helping safe driving.

With the development of the times and the advancement of science and technology, whether it is technology driving smart life or user demand guiding technological change, creating a smart cockpit that combines the advantages of borderless interaction, immersive experience, and design aesthetics is becoming the focus of current automotive innovation. The exterior rearview mirror, known as the driver's "third eye", is also accelerating its transformation towards technological aesthetics under this wave of intelligence, and the Jinmai CMS (Camera Monitor System) solution came into being.
The solution is based on the new national standard GB15084-2022 "Performance and Installation Requirements for Indirect Vision Devices for Motor Vehicles". It consists of three parts: a high-definition camera, a control system, and a display screen. It is a cost-effective platform-based system-level solution. When the vehicle is running, the CMS camera installed outside the vehicle processes the image through multiple algorithms and transmits it to the high-definition display screen in the cockpit in real time for the driver to perceive and judge the vehicle's surroundings. The solution has the advantages of better imaging, lower latency, larger range, and anti-glare. Even in extreme environments such as rain, snow, fog, and darkness, the image is still clear and smooth. It can be said to be the "strongest aid" for safe driving!
Unlike traditional CMS, which mostly consists of "1 controller + 2 cameras + 2 electronic screens", Jinmai adopts the technical route and structure of "(1 controller + 1 camera + 1 electronic screen) × 2". The control end of the former is serializer coaxial transmission to drive the display of the screens on both sides, which requires an additional adapter board behind the screen. However, in most cases, the screen supplier does not provide this supporting business and service. The vehicle manufacturer or controller supplier must add additional deserializer chips and perform interface design on their own, thereby increasing unnecessary costs. In the Jinmai CMS solution, the controllers on both sides are independently connected to the camera and screen, so that the left and right sides do not affect each other, and the controller is directly installed on the back of the screen, which not only saves the adapter board, but also reduces the cost of adding deserializers and coaxial lines, and the structure is simpler and the system cost is better.

The Jinmai solution replaces the traditional large-ear exterior mirrors on both sides with two 2M@60fps high-definition cameras. The volume is only about 1/3 of the traditional rearview mirror or even smaller, which is more in line with aerodynamic principles to reduce wind resistance, thereby further reducing wind noise. The cabin is equipped with two 1280×720@60fps high-definition displays to ensure high-quality image output. It uses an image processing microcontroller (MCU) from Infineon Cypress, equipped with two Arm Cortex-M7 cores with a frequency of up to 320 MHz, with best-in-class ASIL-B safety performance. The built-in new graphics engine, equipped with its new intelligent rendering technology, can reduce the memory required for graphics processing by 3 to 5 times. The innovative "row cache processing technology" only requires 10% of the cache size of traditional frame cache solutions compared to similar devices on the market, thereby reducing power consumption, memory requirements and BOM costs.
The average delay of the overall solution is less than 40ms, and the power-on start-up time is less than 2 seconds. The performance indicators are far better than the national standard and the industry average level. It supports automatic and touch screen zoom, field of view movement, color brightness and other adjustment functions; an optional serializer can bypass the image data to other domain controller systems to achieve the expansion of AI functions, intelligent identification and warning of people, vehicles, obstacles, lane lines, etc.; it supports subsequent OTA upgrades to further expand application capabilities. The field of view tracking function can effectively expand the visual range. When turning, the field of view in the corresponding direction will automatically expand; when reversing, the field of view on both sides and below will expand at the same time to reduce blind spots and obtain a wider-angle field of view than traditional mirrors.
Jinmai's self-developed digital-analog field of view calibration system is based on the triple coordinate system of camera position, vehicle body, and camera imaging to perform optimal fusion calibration on viewing angle, installation position, and human visual principle. The system involves a large number of parameters and engineering-level development operations to ensure that the background parameters can be dynamically optimized and adjusted and output in real time. At the same time, it is equipped with multiple optimization algorithms, such as fog penetration, anti-flicker, and strong light suppression, to obtain the best imaging and scene field of view. Internationally advanced hardware configuration, mature and reliable application system, and powerful and rich functional support can greatly shorten the development and verification cycle of vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.

Qin Chen, deputy general manager of Jinmai, said: "CMS not only provides stronger visual assistance, but also concerns the driving safety of drivers and passengers. In the past 20 years of development and technological accumulation, Jinmai has not only focused on product technology itself, but also on the safety of the entire product platform. All product solutions have been fully demonstrated and rigorously tested and verified. CMS is another innovative solution of Jinmai in the field of smart cockpits, with significant advantages in technological innovation, functional integration, safety and reliability, and system cost. Jinmai is actively working with domestic and foreign partners to continuously promote the innovation and innovative application of advanced connection transmission and visual imaging technology in smart cockpits, implement more breakthrough results, and create a safer, smarter and better travel experience."
