On July 11, the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance (referred to as the " Battery Alliance") released the domestic power battery installation volume data and rankings of the TOP15 in June 2023 and January-June.
Data show that my country's power battery installed capacity in June was 32.9GWh, a year-on-year increase of 21.8% and a month-on-month increase of 16.5%. Among them, the installed volume of ternary batteries is 10.1GWh, accounting for 30.6% of the total installed volume; the installed volume of lithium iron phosphate batteries is 22.7GWh, accounting for 69.1% of the total installed volume.
Obviously, lithium iron phosphate batteries continue to “beat” ternary batteries in terms of power battery installed capacity . It is also worth mentioning that the new energy storage battery sales in June were also dominated by lithium iron phosphate batteries , accounting for over 99%.
From January to June, the cumulative installed volume of power batteries in my country was 152.1GWh, a year-on-year increase of 38.1%. Among them, the cumulative installed volume of ternary batteries is 48.0GWh, accounting for 31.5% of the total installed volume; the cumulative installed volume of lithium iron phosphate batteries is 103.9GWh, accounting for 68.3% of the total installed volume.
In terms of energy storage batteries, in June, my country's energy storage battery sales totaled 8.7GWh, of which lithium iron phosphate battery sales were 8.7GWh. From January to June, my country’s cumulative sales of energy storage batteries reached 31.5GWh. Among them, the cumulative sales volume of lithium iron phosphate batteries is 31.2GWh.
Putting some data together, perhaps the comparison will be more intuitive and we can see whether there is currently a surplus of power batteries:
In June, my country's power battery production totaled 60.1GWh, sales totaled 52.2GWh, exports totaled 10.0GWh, and vehicle loading volume was 32.9GWh.
From January to June, my country's cumulative power battery production reached 293.6GWh, cumulative sales reached 256.5GWh, cumulative exports reached 56.7GWh, and cumulative vehicle installation volume reached 152.1GWh.
Competitive landscape of power battery companies
The top 15 domestic power battery companies in terms of vehicle installation volume in June are: CATL , BYD , China New Aviation, Everview Lithium Energy , Guoxuan Hi- Tech , Xinwangda , Zhengli New Energy, Honeycomb Energy, LG New Energy, Funeng Technology , Ruipu Lanjun, Jiewei Power, Duofuoduo, SK On, Rongsheng Mengli.

From the above two lists, it can be clearly seen that the top three, CATL, BYD, and China New Aviation, have a solid market position and clear levels of hierarchy. Yiwei Lithium Energy, ranked fourth, has almost half the installed capacity of China New Airlines, whether in June or from January to June.
Between fourth and fifth is the competition between Yiwei Lithium Energy and Guoxuan Hi-Tech. Currently, Yiwei Lithium Energy is better in the rankings.
Sunwanda ranks sixth, and there is a clear distance between Guoxuan Hi-tech, which ranked fifth, and Zhengli New Energy, which ranked seventh in June, or LG New Energy, which ranked seventh from January to June, and there is also a clear distance.
After the top six, the market changes have been more obvious and the competition is fierce: Zhengli New Energy is coming fiercely, and it has successively won the appointment of SAIC Maxus, SAIC General and other OEMs; Honeycomb Energy's series of power battery products are gradually being promoted to market.
The competition among Zhengli New Energy, Honeycomb Energy, LG New Energy, Funeng Technology, and Ruipu Lanjun ranked behind Sunwanda is fierce, and Jiewei Power and Duofu are inseparable.
In the TOP15 in June, SK On and Rongshengmeng Li were only on the list, ranking 14th and 15th respectively; in the TOP15 from January to June, SK On and Rongshengmengli were not on the list, ranking 14th. It is Lishen, and No. 15 is Anchi New Energy.
It is worth mentioning that compared with the previous five months, the number of power battery companies supporting new energy vehicles increased in June, with newly added companies such as Lianlian Tianyi, Tianyi Energy, Huzhou Weilan Technology, Xingying Technology, and Zhejiang Guanyu. . In addition, in June, the electric charge of a pure electric passenger car increased to 15kWh, and the energy density of the power battery system reached 261Wh/Kg.
List of top five companies
Ningde era
Relying on its huge customer base, CATL’s position is very stable. However, the latest news may not be a good thing for CATL.
It is understood that Tesla ’s Shanghai factory has begun laying off employees related to battery assembly. The layoffs mainly involve employees in the first phase of battery assembly, and the layoff ratio will exceed 50%. Most of them are compensation for being laid off, a small number of people will be transferred to other positions, and the equipment for the first phase of battery assembly will also be dismantled or transferred.
Tesla is CATL’s largest customer.
BYD
Continuing to benefit from the hot sales of its new energy vehicles is the driving force behind BYD's rapid increase in power battery installations.
In June this year, BYD sold 253,000 vehicles per month, breaking the 250,000 mark for the first time. In the first half of this year, BYD sold 1.25 million vehicles, once again becoming the world's top seller of new energy vehicles.
China New Airlines
In June, the monthly installed capacity of power batteries reached 2.9GWh, which was a record high for the company's single-month installation of power batteries; in June, the power battery supply for new energy passenger vehicles reached 2.8GWh, which was also a record high.
At this point, China Airlines and New Airlines both hit record highs. In the next step, China New Aviation will move towards a monthly installed capacity of 3GWh of power batteries.
On July 3, GAC's Haopin GT was officially launched. This competitive model is expected to be a hot seller, and China New Aviation is its power battery supplier. China Innovation Aviation has mass-produced the lithium iron phosphate battery pack with the highest energy density in the industry (system energy density is as high as 153Wh/kg), which has been installed in Haopin GT.
The Xpeng G6, which market consumers have high hopes for, is equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries and medium-nickel high-voltage ternary lithium batteries developed by Sino-Sino Aviation based on an 800V high-voltage platform . There is a high probability that this model will sell well in the second half of the year.
There are also Weilai Automobile, Jikrypton Automobile, Leapmotor, Changan, Dongfeng, FAW, etc., and China New Aviation is one of the power battery suppliers.
China New Airlines' double record high is just another starting point for China New Airlines.
Yiwei Lithium Energy
Yiwei Lithium's large cylindrical power batteries are unique. With the gradual release of Yiwei Lithium's power battery production capacity, the company's power battery capacity is guaranteed.
Guoxuan Hi-Tech
It is undeniable that Guoxuan Hi-Tech is on the decline in the ranking of power battery installed vehicles.
What will be interesting for Guoxuan Hi-Tech in the future is how many of Volkswagen's subsequent power batteries will be supplied by Guoxuan Hi-Tech, and whether Volkswagen's electric vehicles can sell well.
