According to media reports on December 27, industry insiders said that SK On plans to receive cobalt-free cathode materials in 2024, and the company is establishing a specific roadmap with domestic and foreign cathode material companies. Cobalt-free batteries are expected to be available for electric vehicles as early as 2024 and as late as 2025.

Electric vehicle manufacturers are reducing the content of cobalt itself. Considering human rights and the environment, it is recommended to ban the use of conflict minerals such as tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold, as well as major responsible minerals such as cobalt. In addition, for the purpose of reducing costs, SK On is trying to develop cobalt-free batteries.

Together with the pure lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery under development, SK On will have a rich product lineup.
