At the 2022 World Artificial Intelligence Conference which opened on September 1, Baidu founder, chairman and CEO Robin Li said that after the current L2 level of commercialization of automatic assisted driving, the first commercialization will most likely be the L4 level, rather than the L3 level according to the development stage. This is because the responsibility for an accident at the L2 level lies with the driver, the responsibility for an accident at the L4 level lies with the operator, and it is difficult to define the party responsible for the accident at the L3 level, so it will take a considerable amount of time to popularize it.
Robin Li said that in the past year, AI has made great progress both in terms of technology and commercial applications, and some of them have even changed direction. It usually only takes about 20 days to prepare for obtaining autonomous driving operation qualifications in a certain region, because the technology is already very versatile, and Baidu's autonomous driving is not achieved through overfitting in a specific region.
Regarding the current progress of Jidu Auto, Robin Li said that electrification is the midfield and intelligence is the endgame. Jidu Auto's advantage lies in intelligence, and it will take the intelligent experience to the extreme and become an industry benchmark. Jidu integrates Baidu's AI capabilities and Apollo's core capabilities, and reintegrates and verifies them. In terms of autonomous driving, Jidu will be one generation ahead of Tesla. According to the plan, the limited edition of Jidu's first mass-produced car robot model will be delivered in the second half of 2023, and the second model will be unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show and delivered in 2024.
On June 8, Jidu's first concept car ROBO-01 was officially released. The "car robot" concept is the biggest feature of ROBO-01. The vehicle is equipped with many active deformable structures such as "pop-up light" liftable laser radar, active liftable tail wing, foldable U-shaped steering wheel, etc.; an autonomous driving system composed of two laser radars, 12 cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, 5 millimeter-wave radars and two NVIDIA Orin X chips.
