According to foreign media reports, battery management semiconductor supplier Dukosi announced a collaboration with GlobalFoundries® to produce feature-rich chips for electric vehicles . Dukosi is headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, and its main business is to design and sell new battery management (BMS) technology, which uses wireless communication protocols to transmit data related to the health status of individual cells in the battery throughout the battery pack.

Dukosi's BMS chipset enables suppliers to redesign electric vehicle (EV) batteries, removing more than 95% of the cables currently required to monitor the battery pack's temperature, health and state of charge. Specifically, the design uses near-field communication technology with a single antenna to directly monitor and process data from individual cells in the battery and transmit this data wirelessly to a central BMS. This simplified battery pack design reduces weight and enables higher battery density, thereby increasing driving range.
Working with GF will support the manufacturing of production-grade silicon to meet the stringent safety and reliability standards of its end markets, including AECQ100 automotive grade. Dukosi will use GF's Auto Pro™ solution, a platform for automotive technology features, controls and services, to ensure the quality and reliability of the chip to meet automotive industry requirements. Dukosi chose to work with GF because its technology is so advanced and well suited for "always-on" mission configurations with automotive reliability and quality.
Nat Edington, CEO of Dukosi, said: “Battery management is critical for the safe and efficient operation of batteries. The market needs a BMS that can meet the space and reliability needs of its applications. Until now, battery management has been mainly done by bulky cables connecting all batteries to a central BMS. By replacing individual wires with a simple antenna, the source data of each battery cell can be more accurately measured and processed. In essence, the battery becomes safer, simpler and smarter.
“GF is excited to collaborate with Dukosi to create innovative solutions that will revolutionize battery management systems for electric vehicles,” said Kamal Khouri, vice president of GF’s automotive business.
