On October 6, GM announced the launch of Ultra Cruise, a new advanced driver assistance technology designed to achieve hands-free driving in 95% of driving scenarios. After its launch in the United States and Canada, Ultra Cruise can cover more than 2 million miles of roads. The ultimate goal of this autonomous driving system is to achieve hands-free driving on all paved roads in the United States and Canada.

GM has already launched the Super Cruise driver assistance system, which can achieve hands-free driving under limited conditions. Ultra Cruise is built on the function of Super Cruise, supported by a 5-nanometer, scalable computing architecture, and equipped with LiDAR. At the same time, in terms of functions, Ultra Cruise can respond to permanent traffic control devices; follow internal navigation routes; ensure front and rear spacing; comply with speed limits; support automatic and on-demand lane changes; support left and right turns; support close-range object avoidance; support parking in residential driveways; the system also supports 360-degree perception around the vehicle. In contrast, Ultra Cruise hopes to achieve hands-free driving in more usage scenarios.
