As more and more vehicles begin to add automated driving assistance systems, the maturity of each technology has become a concern for the market. Euro NCAP released the results of the 2020 driver assistance test, which compared the highway assistance systems of 10 models to determine which one is the best. The automated driving assistance system Pro equipped in the new BMW 3 Series won the "VERY GOOD" rating.
BMW calls its latest generation of driver assistance system the Automated Driving Assistance System Pro, which includes more than ten functions such as assisted driving, traffic jam assistance, forward collision warning and emergency braking assistance, lane change assistance, lane deviation assistance, etc. Among them, the traffic jam assistance function allows the driver to release his hands from the steering wheel when the speed is less than 60 kilometers per hour on highways and expressways with clear lane lines, and keep the vehicle automatically following the vehicle in front. The lane change assistance function can automatically detect the surrounding environment and allow the vehicle to change lanes when conditions permit. The driver can activate the lane change assistance function by using the turn indicator. At the same time, BMW can continue to improve the functional performance of the system through remote software upgrades.
In addition, the Autopilot Pro is also equipped with a driver attention monitoring system. The infrared camera is located on the dashboard behind the steering wheel. When the traffic jam assistance function is activated, the camera will monitor the driver's eyes. If the driver's eyes are away from the traffic road ahead, the traffic jam assistance function will exit and the system will give the driver visual and auditory reminders. At this time, the driver needs to take over the vehicle in time.
BMW's automated driving assistance system Pro is equipped with high-end sensors, cameras and radars. The system will fuse the information captured by the cameras and radars for input into driving decisions. The system includes 25 sensors, cameras and radars, including 12 ultrasonic radars, which are mainly used for parking assistance systems; 8 cameras, which are mainly used to capture images for image recognition; 4 short-range millimeter-wave radars, which are mainly used for detecting adjacent lanes; in addition, there is 1 full-range millimeter-wave radar, which is mainly used for detecting vehicles and obstacles in the area in front of the vehicle.
In terms of localization, BMW China's local technical team conducted long-term testing on this function two years before the product was launched, and conducted more than 50,000 kilometers of road tests and more than 300 software version tests. Based on the global platform, the product has completed sufficient optimization and performance improvements for China's unique traffic conditions and driving habits, and fits the user's driving habits and the comfort and experience of actual domestic traffic conditions. For example, the judgment of vehicles cutting in line in dense traffic, China's unique traffic signs, high-speed herringbone markings, speed limit signs, and accurate identification of participants on the road surface.
At present, more than ten models sold by BMW in China can be equipped with automatic driving assistance systems, including BMW X7, X6, X5, iX3, 8 Series two-door/four-door/convertible coupe, 7 Series, 6 Series GT, 5 Series long wheelbase version, 4 Series two-door coupe, 3 Series standard wheelbase/long wheelbase. More models with automatic driving assistance functions will be launched in the future.
