ROHM has signed an agreement with Vitesco Technologies to develop silicon carbide electric vehicle drives.

“Energy efficiency is critical in electric vehicles,” said Thomas Stierle, Vice President of Vitesco. “Since the battery is the only energy source in the vehicle, any losses caused by power conversion must be minimized. Therefore, we are developing SiC components in modular power electronic systems. In order to obtain maximum efficiency from power electronics and electric motors, we will use SiC power devices provided by our partners, so we chose ROHM.”

Vitesco is already developing and testing 800V SiC inverters, aiming to optimize both the inverter switching strategy and the motor, providing higher switching efficiency through higher frequencies and steeper switching slopes, and reducing harmonic losses in the motor. In addition, the company is also working on 800V SiC on-board battery chargers. Vitesco said: "During the collaboration, ROHM and Vitesco will work to create the best combination of ROHM SiC technology and mass produce it; as well as achieve the highest efficiency through the best match of inverter design."

In addition to Rohm's 800V inverter products, the two companies will also develop 400V SiC inverters, and Vitesco plans to start production of 400V SiC inverters in 2025.

Both Röhm and Vitesco have factories near Nuremberg, which can achieve greater synergies.
