Application of smart display
As a technology leader in the fast-growing e-cockpit industry, Visteon Corporation supplied its latest generation of high-definition (HD) digital displays to the Range Rover Velar, released by British automaker Jaguar Land Rover in March 2017. The new Range Rover model is equipped with a fully reconfigurable Visteon 12.3-inch retina-grade HD virtual instrument cluster, which fully demonstrates the industry's leading level in brightness and color. As the main driver interface, the virtual instrument cluster provides drivers with personalized information options in different configurations through a large display area. The instrument cluster includes an instrument panel, an information display area, and a panoramic map in navigation mode.
Visteon has introduced the industry’s first fully digital instrument cluster that displays holographic images of objects on the new Peugeot 208. Peugeot’s unique 3D i-Cockpit is the first true 3D instrument cluster used in a production car.
Interview with Freddie, Global Display Product Director of Visteon
Q: With more and more cockpit display screens in cars, how can we ensure the driver's safety in the event of a vehicle collision?
A: The head collision test conducted by the car manufacturer will ensure that the driver will not suffer too much damage in a collision to a certain extent, including the cockpit instruments. Visteon strictly selects the materials of the display screen and the outer screen to ensure the solidity and pressure resistance of the display screen surface; Visteon optimizes the placement structure of the outer screen so that the screen will not become the main pressure-bearing surface in a collision, reducing the damage to the driver's head.
Q: In the human-machine interaction in the car cockpit, there are fewer and fewer physical buttons. What is Visteon's opinion on the choice between physical buttons and virtual buttons? Voice control is the future development direction. How is Visteon's current development in the development of domestic voice recognition?
A: From the perspective of OEMs, the reduction of physical buttons helps reduce development costs. However, the reduction of physical buttons reduces the user experience, so not every vehicle manufacturer will choose to replace physical buttons with display screens.
Voice recognition is definitely a development direction, but the voice recognition rate of the entire industry is not high, and the feedback method after recognition is not perfect. So we are still working with major suppliers to actively explore better technologies.
