According to CNET, the road is not as smooth as it feels when passengers are riding in a car. The car's suspension system will keep moving, and these movements contain kinetic energy, but in the past, these kinetic energy were wasted. Audi hopes to change this situation. The new suspension system it has developed can capture this energy and convert it into electrical energy.
Audi's electromechanical rotary shock absorbers replace the conventional suspension system. As the wheels bump up and down, the motion is transmitted to the rotary shock absorbers, which transmit the force to the generator, which converts the kinetic energy into electricity. The system is connected to a 48-volt electrical system - Audi has developed this electrical system for the next generation of cars.
CNET said that the new suspension system can not only generate electricity, but also improve the configurability of the suspension system. In addition, it is smaller than the traditional suspension system, making the vehicle more compact and increasing the trunk space.
The electricity generated by the shock absorbers will not be used to drive electric vehicles, but this does not mean that their power generation capacity is low. Audi said that the shock absorbers can generate 100-150 watts of power, but did not mention road conditions.
CNET said that every time we think that the development of automotive technology has reached its limit, new technologies like Audi shock absorbers will come out and subvert our basic understanding of cars. Retractable shock absorbers will not be the whole of suspension technology. There is still enough unused energy in the car waiting for us to use.
