Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia is developing a new generation of supercapacitors. In the future, you may not find huge batteries in electric vehicles because the batteries will be placed in various places such as car walls, roofs, doors, hoods, and floors.
Supercapacitors are currently being used in cars. Compared to lithium batteries, supercapacitors have the advantages of ultra-fast charging speed, ultra-long service life, lighter weight, and safety. The biggest killer is that they can absorb or release extremely high energy instantly. The charging time only takes a few minutes, while current lithium battery electric vehicles take several hours.
However, its current fatal weakness is its low energy density, so the breakthrough of the university in the research and development of the new generation of supercapacitors is to improve the energy density. They said that the new generation of supercapacitors can store more energy than lithium batteries. In the future, a car using this supercapacitor can run 500 kilometers when fully charged.
It is worth mentioning that this battery is also expected to be used in smartphones.
