NTN has recently developed a "Multi Driving System" that will be used in conjunction with in-wheel motor technology in its next-generation electric vehicle, the Q'mo II.
The wheel hub motor system is installed in the wheel and consists of a motor and a reducer. The motor directly drives the wheel, which greatly improves the transmission efficiency compared to the traditional powertrain. For traditional vehicles, the clutch, transmission, drive shaft, differential and even transfer case are indispensable, and these components are not only heavy and make the vehicle structure more complicated, but also require regular maintenance and have a high failure rate. However, the emergence of wheel hub motors can save the above components and greatly save space in the car.
In order to verify the hub motor technology, NTN built a Q'mo prototype electric concept car in 2011. All four wheels were equipped with hub motors and it was unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. This car can rotate around itself and move sideways like a crab. Its strong maneuverability is also highly practical. NTN added a new MDS system to this car, thus giving birth to a new generation of two-seater electric car Q'mo II.
The MDS system controls the left and right wheels at the same time through a single steering device, and can adjust the four wheels to the corresponding angles to achieve self-rotation and lateral movement. The strength and safety of its steering system components have been tested experimentally. Better compatibility and suspension system help the car further lower its center of gravity. Its general cruising speed is 60 km/h.
At this year's Tokyo Motor Show, NTN showcased the Q'mo II electric vehicle, and also demonstrated lateral movement and rotation on site, verifying the improvement in mobility and driving performance of electric vehicles brought by in-wheel motors. In the future, this MDS system will be more widely installed in other electric vehicles, allowing electric vehicles to further demonstrate their agility.
