Where is the future of energy storage?
The current problems in the energy storage market are self-evident. Is it reasonable to force energy storage? Is it a waste to allocate energy without using it? Is it a scam to fail to achieve the expected benefits due to insufficient peak load regulation? In contrast, wind and solar power are frequently abandoned. On the one hand, energy cannot be delivered, on the other hand, electricity is in urgent need, and on the other hand, energy is allocated but not stored. Therefore, the root cause of the problem is not the overcapacity of new energy production capacity, nor is it that energy storage is useless, but that the current new energy consumption market mechanism is still imperfect. This is an inevitable stage in the development of any industry.
Judging from the trends in the global and Chinese energy landscape, under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, China and the United States agreed to "strive to triple global renewable energy installed capacity by 2030." China's leadership pledged to strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. The general trend of China's new energy and new energy storage industries has become clear. When energy storage, especially long-term energy storage, is fully utilized, then at least for a long time in the future, the overcapacity of new energy such as photovoltaics will become a false proposition!
Regarding the choice of energy storage path, according to the plan of the National Energy Administration, the development of new energy storage will develop multiple technical routes simultaneously. The current new energy storage market structure will not change significantly in the short term. Lithium-ion energy storage will still dominate the market, and flywheels, compressed air energy, gravity energy storage, etc. will find their own unique application scenarios; sodium electricity in its infancy will continue to develop and acquire a part of the lithium-ion power market in the future; hydrogen energy will be healthier and more stable, but its positioning is a relatively important component of the future national energy system, but not the core; and flow batteries, the author firmly believes that driven by the huge market for medium and long-term energy storage in the future, will definitely become another mainstream.
