Corre Energy and Siemens Energy are collaborating on the deployment of multi-day compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems. Corre Energy designs, develops, builds and operates utility-scale long-duration energy storage (LDES) projects in Europe and North America. The collaboration agreement aims to accelerate the rollout of the company’s CAES and renewable energy infrastructure projects.

Corre Energy has already been exploring the market in North America and plans to use Siemens Energy’s CAES technology in a 280MW CAES project in West Texas.

“Our collaboration with Siemens Energy enables us to accelerate the deployment of CAES solutions in North America,” said Chet Lyons, president of Corre Energy’s U.S. Development Company. “We are particularly impressed by the breakthrough Siemens Energy has made in demonstrating its turbine’s ability to run on hydrogen, which is key to our clean energy initiatives.”

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and several partners recently signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at accelerating the commercialization of long-duration energy storage.

As more and more renewable energy sources are added to the grid, long-duration energy storage becomes increasingly important. LDES systems can store and release large amounts of energy, from hours to days or even weeks. Different traditional and new technologies are being explored and developed, including compressed air energy storage, flow batteries, pumped hydro, and thermal energy storage.

The goals of the MOU include disseminating knowledge about the technical, economic, and resiliency benefits offered by long-duration energy storage and providing access to specific DOE and national laboratory core capabilities in energy storage and infrastructure integration to support research, development, demonstration, and deployment purposes.
