Shenzhen, July 31, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Recently, TÜV SÜD Group (hereinafter referred to as "TÜV SÜD") issued PPP 51096A*, PPP 51097A*, and UL 1973 and other standard certification certificates for the 70Ah sodium-ion battery cells of Xingchu Century Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Xingchu Century"). Mr. Ouyang Qiangyou, General Manager of TÜV SÜD New Energy Testing (Guangdong) Co., Ltd., Mr. Jin Junhua, Manager of TÜV SÜD Battery Department, Mr. Chen Renzhao, Vice President of Xingchu Century, and Mr. Liu Yang, Deputy Director of Xingchu Century Chengdu Research Institute, attended and witnessed the awarding ceremony.

Sodium-ion batteries have attracted much attention from the new energy industry in recent years due to their abundant sodium raw materials and low cost. They are considered to be a potential alternative to lithium batteries in large-scale stationary energy storage. In the future, they are very likely to become an effective supplement to lithium batteries in commercial vehicles or some passenger vehicles.
Xingchu Century has made early arrangements for the research and development of sodium-ion batteries. Its 70Ah sodium-ion battery cells have passed the tests of multiple standards such as TÜV SÜD PPP 51096A*, PPP 51097A* and UL 1973, and obtained TÜV SÜD type certification. The test standards cover two different application scenarios, energy storage and power, including the International Electrotechnical Commission (IECEE) standards and American standards. The acquisition of this certification shows that the safety of the product meets the requirements of national standards, laying a good foundation for the next step of application.
Mr. Chen Renzhao, Vice President of Xingchu Century, said: "Sodium-ion batteries have good high-rate characteristics and good safety, and are applicable in many fields, such as distributed energy storage, low-speed transportation, backup power supplies, etc. The acquisition of the TÜV SÜD certification is a summary and affirmation of our current work. We will continue to invest in the research and development of sodium-ion batteries to help the energy storage industry achieve new breakthroughs."
Mr. Ouyang Qiangyou of TÜV SÜD congratulated Xingchu Century: "I am very happy to witness Xingchu Century's achievements in the field of sodium-ion batteries. TÜV SÜD and Xingchu Century have cooperated in the field of new energy for many years. From lithium-ion batteries in the past to sodium-ion batteries today, we have seen Xingchu Century's efforts and achievements in the battery field. The progress of science and technology has driven the development of standards. When international standards were not yet mature, TÜV SÜD's expert team and the companies jointly discussed and developed new battery standards so that the products had a basis to rely on. This also allowed the international market to see the speed of China's technological development. China's battery technology has a promising future."
* In response to the rise of sodium-ion batteries, and considering that there is currently no IEC standard specifically for sodium ions, TÜV SÜD’s expert team has developed two certification schemes specifically for sodium-ion batteries: PPP 51096A and PPP 51097A.
PPP 51096A is based on IEC 62619:2022, and has taken stricter considerations on short circuit, overcharge, forced discharge and other tests, and is suitable for the safety assessment of sodium-ion batteries for industrial energy storage; PPP 51097A is
based on IEC 62660-2:2018 and IEC 62660-3:2022, and has taken stricter considerations on short circuit, overcharge, forced discharge and other tests, and is suitable for the safety, reliability and abuse test assessment of sodium-ion batteries for road vehicle power.
