Energy storage can improve power quality and reduce electricity costs for industrial entities in Mexico, and a new international cooperative consortium is making the technology available to customers in a sharing model.

The "energy storage as a service" product has been launched through a collaboration between international renewable energy company Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), US energy analysis and software company Energy Toolbase and local developer Ecopulse.

Mexico has a large base of industrial facilities that rely on a quality electricity supply, and battery energy storage systems (BESS) can help them ensure that power quality.

FRV said yesterday that customers who purchase energy storage services will not have to pay upfront costs or fixed fees for the battery installation, which will be fully funded by the renewable energy company .

In the next system deployment, the system is integrated by Ecopulse, which will use lithium-ion battery technology and will be optimized using Energy Toolbase's Acumen Energy Management System (AcumenEMS).

Not only do these systems save customers money and improve power quality, they also reduce the strain on the grid that their heavy electricity usage can cause, especially during peak hours.

The AcumenEMS software uses AI-driven algorithms to optimize BESS operations , while the complete BESS hardware solution is developed by FRV-X, FRV’s technology incubation arm.

Another locally-based partner, Operati, will provide real-time customer service.

FRV, owned by Saudi Arabian energy company Abdul Lateef Jamil Energy, operates nearly 1GW of renewable assets in Mexico, and Miguel Sepulveda, FRV-X’s director of Latin America business development, said the storage-as-a-service projects and products will help actively consolidate a sustainable energy system in Mexico.

“This program offers users a flexible and efficient option that will provide them with immediate results and benefits,” Sepulveda said.

FRV has been active in the international renewable energy sector since 2006 and delivered its first battery storage project in the UK in 2020, followed by further projects in that market, with construction of a solar-plus-storage project in Australia commencing in mid-2021.
