New Zealand police said that at 8:20 a.m. local time on March 12, an explosion occurred at a substation near Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, and smoke could be seen rising from the substation. The explosion caused a large-scale power outage in Wellington and surrounding areas.

Wellington Power Company confirmed that a total of 94,000 customers in Wellington and surrounding areas had their power supply cut off.
