On December 27, 2019, the State Grid Zhangbei Flexible DC Grid Experimental Demonstration Project (hereinafter referred to as the "Zhangbei Flexible DC Project"), a key supporting project for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the world's first flexible DC grid, was fully launched and commissioned, and is expected to be put into operation in the first half of 2020. After commissioning, the Winter Olympics venues are expected to achieve 100% clean electricity supply. At the same time, the Zhangbei Flexible DC Project can deliver about 14 billion kWh of clean electricity to Beijing every year, significantly increasing the proportion of clean energy consumption in Beijing.
The full launch and commissioning of the Zhangbei Flexible Direct Current Project has excited Guo Liang, the owner project manager of the Engineering Management Branch of State Grid Jibei Electric Power Co., Ltd. and the secretary of the Zhangbei Flexible Direct Current Joint Party Branch. He clearly remembers the scene when the engineering management and construction personnel went to the Zhangbei Converter Station site in early 2018.
In April 2018, Guo Liang and his colleagues first arrived in Zhangbei and found that even in spring, the soil at the converter station site was still frozen. Faced with complex geological conditions such as frost heave, expansion, and strong corrosion, the owner's project department urgently conducted nationwide surveys, consulted geological survey reports of similar geology, and invited experts from well-known university laboratories to conduct repeated tests on the ratio of backfill soil and additional fillers. The problem was solved within a month.
There are many builders like Guo Liang who are working hard in the Zhangbei Flexible DC Project. On this vast land, they have continuously made breakthroughs in core technologies and independently developed a number of key equipment. The Zhangbei Flexible DC Project will also create 12 world firsts, form a complete set of flexible DC transmission solutions for China, and further consolidate and expand my country's leading edge in the world's DC transmission field.
