A subsidiary of Chinese state-owned energy group China Energy Engineering Corp has started construction of two large solar power plants that will also include one of the country’s largest energy storage systems, according to Hong Kong exchange filings.

China Energy Engineering Group's Shanxi Electric Power Engineering Co., Ltd. has begun construction of a 500MW solar PV project consisting of two 250MW power plants in Licheng and Pingshun counties in Shanxi province. No further details were disclosed in the document.

At the same time, China Energy Engineering Group Jiangsu Electric Power Design Institute began to build a large-scale energy storage system in Jiangbei New District, Nanjing.

The company claims that the 130.88MW/268.6MWh grid-side electrochemical energy storage system has the largest capacity and highest power output capability in China, but did not disclose further the specific storage technology used - likely lithium-ion batteries - for the two-hour system.

China is building large-scale flow battery projects and lithium-ion energy storage projects, with policy initiatives including a national energy storage strategy and market dynamics, including high regional renewable energy penetration, coal-fired power plant retirement or energy efficiency upgrades. In February this year, lithium battery company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) deployed a 100MWh battery energy storage system at the hybrid renewable energy plant of the Luneng Haixi Hybrid Energy Demonstration Project, according to news reports.

According to a recent report by Wood Mackenzie, China and the United States will account for more than half of the global energy storage market share by 2024.
