In Jiangsu, the large-scale application of grid-side energy storage has achieved good social and economic benefits.
At present, the first batch of eight grid-side energy storage power stations in Jiangsu have been connected to the grid and put into operation in July last year. The total power of this batch of energy storage power stations is 101,000 kilowatts, the total capacity is 202,000 kWh, and they have been successfully connected to Jiangsu's "Large-Scale Source-Grid-Load Friendly Interaction System". The access of large-scale energy storage power stations has upgraded the original system to a "source-grid-load-storage" system, which can achieve a maximum load response of 2.8 million kilowatts in milliseconds, providing a "safety lock" for the safe operation of large power grids.
The energy storage power station has played a strong peak role during the peak period of electricity consumption in Zhenjiang in summer. Since its operation, the Zhenjiang Energy Storage Power Station has released a total of 45.15 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to 75 days of living electricity consumption for more than 200,000 residents in Zhenjiang New District, effectively improving the clean energy consumption capacity of the Zhenjiang power grid and the economic operation level of the power grid.
In addition to playing a role in peak load regulation when there is a shortage of conventional power supply, the energy storage power station can also track new energy power generation and balance the output of photovoltaic power generation in Zhenjiang area.
At 12 noon on October 1, 2018, the 8MW photovoltaic power station was generating electricity. Due to the strong sunlight during the noon period, photovoltaic power generation was always at 3 to 6MW, of which energy storage participated in charging 3MW. During the rest of the time, photovoltaic power generation dropped sharply, with power generation output reduced to 3MW or even no power generation. The application of energy storage power stations balances the fluctuations generated by photovoltaic power generation and better meets the requirements of power grid power control and power quality.
The rapid response and flexible performance of the energy storage power station have greatly improved the Jiangsu power grid's ability to accept renewable energy. It can reduce coal consumption by 5,300 tons per year due to frequency and peak regulation of thermal power plants, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 13,000 tons, and reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 400 tons, with significant environmental benefits.
Jiangsu's second batch of grid-side energy storage projects will build 10 energy storage power stations in five regions including Nanjing and Suzhou, with a total capacity of 752,600 kWh. Among them, the Nanjing Jiangbei Energy Storage Power Station started construction on March 6.
The rapid development of energy storage in Jiangsu is inseparable from the technical research and development and accumulation of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power in related fields. On January 24, the research results of the project "Key Technologies and Engineering Demonstration for Large-scale Electrochemical Energy Storage Application on the Grid Side" of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power successfully passed the technical certification of the expert group of China Electricity Council. The appraisal committee composed of experts such as Zhou Xiaoxin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, believes that State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power has successfully solved the key problems of grid-side electrochemical energy storage planning, design, and operation, effectively promoted the development of grid-side energy storage applications, and reached the international leading level in the field of energy storage technology.
"As an important part of the smart and strong power grid and the ubiquitous power Internet of Things, the key to the development of grid-side energy storage is innovation. We must break the understanding of the traditional power system, take the construction of 'three types and two networks' as the goal, and plan the development of energy storage with a completely new mindset." said Zhang Cheng, deputy director of the State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Economic and Technological Research Institute.
