Germany and Poland agree to battery production alliance

The Polish and German governments have agreed to work together to create an independent battery production base in Europe.

At the recent German-Polish Economic Forum in Berlin, German Economy and Energy Minister Peter Altmaier and Polish Technology Minister Jadwiga Emilewicz presented a joint statement outlining strategic cooperation in several areas, including a commitment to "jointly work on projects to build a European battery production base". The minister said batteries are a key technology not only for the expected electric transportation boom, but also for many other uses of electricity storage, such as private batteries for home use. "In order to remain competitive, the ability to apply this technology on a large scale in a variety of situations is crucial," the statement said.

German Economy Minister Altmaier already said in February that the battery industry is a key component in helping Germany maintain economic and technological leadership in Europe and around the world, a view backed by a recent study by think tank Agora Energiewende, which said it should focus on batteries as one of the most effective ways to improve its climate action.

A recent Bloomberg report found that Germany’s electricity storage market hit a new record of more than €5 billion last year.
