It is harvest time again for more than 10,000 mu of peanuts in Dashawan Village, Zhaogu Township, Huixian City, Henan Province. As a green control demonstration area in Huixian City, villagers have not used chemical pesticides to control peanut pests for two consecutive years. To the surprise of the villagers, pests in the fields have begun to disappear. The yield of more than 500 kilograms per mu and the green quality without any chemical residue have made their green peanuts gradually famous and in short supply.

Wang Yumin, deputy mayor of Huixian City, said that peanuts are one of the main sources of income for local farmers. In the past, due to repeated cropping for many years and serious pests, the yield per mu could only be maintained at more than 200 kilograms by relying on a large amount of chemical pesticides for prevention and control. With the assistance of the Xinxiang Municipal Government and the Science and Technology Bureau, the Huixian Municipal Government has invested 8.25 million yuan since 2006 to introduce the "Tianyi" solar insect killer, which is provided to farmers free of charge. More than 20,000 solar insect killer lamps have been installed in 42 administrative villages including Zhaogu Township and Hongzhou Township, and 320,000 mu of land have been solar-powered to kill insects, increasing the average yield of peanuts by 60 to 100 kilograms per mu, and saving farmers more than 300 million yuan.

In Houtianzhuang, a non-demonstration area adjacent to Dashawan Village, Wu Kongming, director of the Institute of Plant Protection of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, who is conducting a comparison of insect control effects, told reporters that after random monitoring and comparison at multiple probe points, the number of beetles (grubs) per square meter was only one and a half in the control area; while in the non-control area, the number of beetles (grubs) per square meter ranged from fifteen to sixteen, and as many as 26.

Continuous use of solar energy physical pest control for two years can generally achieve the effect of eradicating pests. At present, under the active promotion of local governments, solar energy physical pest control with different spectra set according to different crops has been widely promoted and used on peanuts, cotton, fruits, vegetables and other varieties in Henan, Shaanxi, Anhui, Xinjiang and other provinces.
