Preface

With the popularity of mobile phones, portable music players and portable game consoles, people have begun to demand that these electronic devices be designed to be more compact, high-performance, low-power and low-noise. Therefore, a large number of ultra-small capacitors, resistors and EMI noise filters are used in these small portable devices.

Chip ferrite beads have a simple structure and are widely used for EMI noise suppression because of their small size and ease of use. Murata Manufacturing has long been able to mass-produce 0402 size (1.0×0.5mm) chip ferrite beads BLM15 series and 0201 size (0.6×0.3mm) BLM03 series. However, in order to achieve the same noise suppression effect as large-size products, the number of coils inside the beads must be increased and their impedance value must be increased. This will increase the DC resistance and the power consumption of the circuit. This has become a problem that must be solved.

By developing new materials and improving processing technology, Murata has successfully developed and produced a small low DC resistance product, the 0402 size chip ferrite bead BLM15AX series, which is 60% lower than previous products. This series of products saves power consumption in small portable device circuits and extends battery life.

Here we would like to introduce the new BLM15AX series of chip ferrite beads.

Feature requirements

In small portable devices, in order to suppress noise, ferrite beads need to have both the small size of the SMD type and a large impedance value, so as to obtain efficient noise suppression characteristics and low power consumption. Based on the above points, the characteristic requirements for ferrite beads can be summarized as follows, as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Ferrite bead characteristic requirements

Figure 2 shows the DC resistance and impedance distribution of ferrite beads on the market (catalog specifications). The thick arrow in the figure shows that ferrite beads will pursue low DC resistance and high impedance characteristics in the future.

The specifications of the previous 0402-type chip ferrite beads BLM15AG series (shown by ● in the figure) were distributed at the bottom of the table compared to previous chip ferrite beads (shown by ◆ in the figure), but the new BLM15AX series has achieved the industry's lowest resistance specifications (see ○ in the figure).

Characteristics of chip ferrite beads that achieve low DC resistance

The BLM15AX series is a new type of 0402 size chip ferrite bead obtained by developing new materials and improving processing steps.

The BLM15AX series ranges from 10Ω to 1000Ω (100MHz). In addition, the DC resistance is reduced by 60% compared to previous products. Figure 3 shows that the resistance value changes little after reliability testing (high temperature resistance, thermal shock).

Future development

Chip ferrite beads will be in great demand in the small portable device market in the future.

Murata will further research chip ferrite beads for noise suppression that are small in size and have lower DC resistance, and will work on miniaturization and higher performance of products to contribute to the issue of low energy consumption.
