ROHM launches new ultra-efficient foldable battery management system evaluation board

Rohm has launched a new evaluation board to demonstrate an ultra-efficient battery management system for thin, small IoT devices. With the REFLVBMS001-EVK-001 board, engineers can evaluate Rohm's Nano Energy ultra-low current power IC and NGK Insulators' EnerCera lithium-ion rechargeable battery. According to Rohm, the battery management system extends application standby time by 60 times compared to existing solutions.

The 56×32 mm evaluation board is equipped with three ICs: a Nano Energy step-down DC/DC converter (BD70522GUL) with a quiescent current of only 180 nA, a Nano Energy reset IC (BD5230NVX-2C) for detecting abnormal voltages, and a linear battery charger for low-voltage batteries (BD7163QWZ). It also has the EnerCera Pouch EC382794P-C installed, an ultra-thin, 0.45 mm thick, 27 mAh capacity, flexible rechargeable battery. The thickness of all installed components is less than 0.60 mm (1.60 mm including the board).


The low current consumption of Nano Energy's power and reset ICs minimizes losses and maximizes battery life, while the battery charger ICs provide optimal charging for a wide range of rechargeable batteries. Application examples of this efficient battery management system include wearables and industrial IoT devices such as smart cards, electronic shelf labels, smart meters, and alarms.


The REFLVBMS001-EVK-001 evaluation board is priced at $143. It is available through online distributors Digi-Key, Mouser and Farnell.
