Taiwan panel giant AUO recently revealed that the use of LED in large panel light sources is still focused on high-end products at this stage. However, AUO seems quite satisfied with the company's research and development progress in new technologies for TV or NB panels. Thanks to manufacturers' active research and development, TV panels using LED backlight modules have gradually entered the mass production stage. In addition to Chimei's 32-inch LED panels, which will be officially shipped in the second half of the year, AUO recently stated that it will lock in the high-end market and withdraw from panels above 37 inches that use LED light sources. However, LED TV panels use RGB mixed white light technology, which is relatively expensive. In comparison, AUO believes that NB panels that only need to introduce white light LEDs will have a comparative advantage in future sales.
TRI’s view:
The benefits of using LED backlights include being environmentally friendly, thin and light, power-saving, and having good color saturation. Japanese manufacturers such as Sony, Toshiba, and Fujitsu and Taiwanese manufacturers such as AUO, Chimei, and Everlight have successively launched large-size LED products, and LED has become the most popular backlight source to replace existing light sources.
High-quality NB is a short-term strategy for LED-related manufacturers to enter the market
At present, there are still many problems with LED backlight sources for large-size displays, especially for LCD TVs that use R, G, and B to emit LED white light, which still has cost and heat dissipation issues to be resolved. However, for LED white light backlight sources that emit blue LED + phosphor (YAG) for displays below 12 inches, the cost and technology are relatively small compared to current cold cathode tube backlight products. Therefore, related manufacturers use NOTEBOOK as a starting point to enter the large-size display market. In the short term, the strategy is to use thin and light power-saving boutique NBs as market segments, and ambitiously develop towards the larger display backlight market.
Compared with traditional CCFL backlight sources, the thickness of LED backlight NB panels is about 1/2 of that of CCEL backlight NB panels. Most importantly, LED backlight NB panels can save about 20% to 30% of electricity compared with CCFL backlight NB panels. Lightness and power saving are the real advantages of LED backlight NB that can make it popular.
LED NB era is coming
In the past few years, people in various circles have doubted whether the development of LED in large-size flat-panel displays is feasible. Judging from the current trend, LED has sufficient reasons to replace the existing cold cathode lamp. In 2006, the growth of white light LED for mobile phones has slowed down, and the price of 7-inch white light LED panels has dropped sharply. With the cost beating CCFL, LED will inevitably move into the large-size flat-panel display market in the future. TRI observes that mid-2007 will be the take-off stage of the LED NB product market, and the advantages of white light LED NOTEBOOK, which is thin and light and saves electricity, will be the first step for LED and its related manufacturers to enter the large-size flat-panel display market.
