Fraport has begun testing the world's first walk-through security gate designed for fast passenger passage at Frankfurt Airport. The R&S QPS Walk2000 from Rohde & Schwarz is designed to speed up security checks. The first of these gates is currently in use in Area A of Terminal 1. Passengers simply walk through the gate at a normal pace without stopping. The testing and evaluation phase will last six months and will provide Fraport and Rohde & Schwarz with important information to help optimize the system.

The R&S QPS Walk2000 is a 360-degree walk-through security gate that can quickly and contactlessly detect a wide range of items. This scanner provides a more pleasant security check experience: passengers do not need to stop to be scanned, but can slowly walk through the R&S QPS Walk2000. Millimeter wave technology can also penetrate multiple layers of clothing, so there is no need to take off jackets and coats, which is a great improvement in comfort and personal privacy during security checks.

AI-based detection software can automatically identify metallic and non-metallic objects. Any anomalies detected on the passenger are accurately displayed in real time on a neutral avatar, reducing the need for follow-up inspections. If further inspection is required, security personnel can focus on the area that triggered the alarm without frisking the passenger.

The joint evaluation of the walk-through gates by the German Federal Police and Fraport at Frankfurt Airport is another example of the excellent cooperation that continues to emerge since Fraport took over the management of security checks at the airport itself. Fraport purchased and set up the R&S QPSWalk2000, but it was the German Federal Police who conducted all security-related tests and gave final approval for day-to-day operations. The goal of the walk-through gates is to speed up and improve passenger comfort while maintaining the same high level of security. The checkpoint chosen for the test phase is located in Schengen Zone A in Terminal 1. Due to the high passenger flow in this area, this terminal is ideally suited for such a test: On average, 15,000 passengers use the terminal every day.

The test phase at Frankfurt Airport was designed to directly compare the R&S QPS Walk2000 with the already installed and proven R&S QPS201 security gate and to identify any differences immediately. This collaborative trial served to verify that walk-through security checks are just as reliable as the efficient checks provided by the R&S QPS201.
