The spray rating tester is used to determine the surface wettability of fabrics. It consists of a metal frame allowing distilled water to be sprayed through a nozzle onto the specimen at 45° and 150 mm below the nozzle. The appearance of the specimen is compared with an optional photographic scale. The tester complies with ISO 4920, AATCC 22, M&S P23 standards. After turning on the spray rating tester, place the instrument on a flat and smooth surface in a room with stable temperature and humidity.
operate:
5.1 To calibrate the device, place 250 ml of distilled water at 27 ± 1°C (80 ± 2°C) in the test funnel and measure the time required for the funnel to empty.
5.2 Securely fix the sample in a ring with a diameter of 152.4 mm (6.0 in) so that the surface of the fabric sample is exposed to the water mist. The surface of the sample should be smooth and free of wrinkles.
5.3 Place the hula hoop on the test bench with the fabric uppermost so that the center of the spray pattern coincides with the center of the hula hoop.
5.3.1 In the case of spun yarn, gabardine, corduroy or similarly constructed fabrics, place the hoop on the rack so that the direction of the fabric is consistent with that of the final product.
5.4 Pour 250 ml of distilled water at 27 ± 1°C (80 ± 2°C) into the tester’s funnel and allow it to spray onto the specimen for 25-30 s.
5.4.1 When filling with distilled water, avoid touching the funnel with the graduated cylinder. Movement of the funnel will change the spray distribution on the specimen.
5.5 Hold the hoop, bottom edge, firmly against a solid object with the fabric facing the object, then rotate the hoop 180° and hold it once again at the point just before.
5.6 Repeat 5.2 to 5.5 for all three samples.
5. Evaluation
6.1 Immediately after tapping, compare the water or spot pattern to the rating chart. Give the surface of the sample a rating that corresponds to the nearest grade on the rating chart.
6.2 Intermediate ratings may be used for ratings of 50 or higher (95, 85, 75, 60). (See Figure 1, Table 1)
6.3 In classifying loose fabrics or porous fabrics (such as voile), any passage of water through the openings of the fabric is not taken into account.
