Rogowski coil is a hollow annular coil that can be directly put on the conductor to be measured. The AC current flowing through the conductor will generate an alternating magnetic field around the conductor, thereby inducing an AC voltage signal proportional to the current transformation ratio in the coil. The output voltage of the coil Uout = Mdi/dt, where M is the mutual inductance of the coil, and di/dt is the rate of change of current over time.

The Rogowski coil integrates the voltage signal output by the coil through an integrator to obtain an AC voltage signal, which can accurately reproduce the waveform of the measured current signal.

Rogowski coil and its matching integrator is a universal current measurement system with a wide range of applications. It has no special requirements on the frequency, current size and conductor size of the measured current. The phase difference between the output signal of the system and the measured current waveform is less than 0.1°, and it can measure current signals with complex waveforms, such as transient impulse current.

One of the outstanding features of the Rogowski coil current measurement system is its good linearity. The coil does not contain magnetic saturation elements, and within the range, the system's output signal is always linear with the current signal to be measured. The range of the system is not determined by linearity, but by the maximum breakdown voltage. The integrator is also linear, and the range depends on its own electrical characteristics. Good linearity makes the Rogowski coil very easy to calibrate, because the system can be calibrated using a common reference signal, and the calibrated system is linear within the entire range, and the measurement results are accurate. At the same time, due to good linearity, the system's range can be determined at will, and its transient response capability is outstanding.

Rogowski coil measurement principle diagram

The Rogowski coil is a toroidal coil uniformly wound on a non-ferromagnetic material. The output signal is the differential of the current with respect to time. Through a circuit that integrates the output voltage signal, the input current can be truly restored. The coil has the characteristics of real-time current measurement, fast response speed, and no saturation. It is suitable for AC, especially high-frequency and large current measurement.
