Atomic absorption spectroscopy is an analytical method that quantifies the content of the element being measured based on the absorption intensity of the corresponding atomic resonance radiation in the ultraviolet and visible light ranges by the outer electrons of the gaseous ground-state atoms. It is a method for measuring the absorption of light radiation by specific gaseous atoms.

This method is a new instrumental analysis method that appeared in the mid-1950s and gradually developed thereafter. It is widely used in various fields such as geology, metallurgy, machinery, chemical industry, agriculture, food, light industry, biomedicine, environmental protection, and materials science. This method is mainly applicable to the analysis of trace and trace components in samples.

The atoms of each element can not only emit a series of characteristic spectral lines, but also absorb characteristic spectral lines with the same wavelength as the emission lines. When a characteristic wavelength of light emitted by a light source passes through atomic vapor, that is, when the frequency of the incident radiation is equal to the energy frequency required for the electrons in the atoms to transition from the ground state to a higher energy state (generally the first excited state), the outer electrons in the atoms will selectively absorb the characteristic spectral lines emitted by the same element, weakening the incident light. The degree to which the characteristic spectral lines are weakened by absorption is called absorbance A, which is proportional to the content of the element being measured.

Atomic absorption has strict requirements on the ion content in pure water. The water quality must reach the ultrapure water level, that is, the resistivity must reach more than 18 megohms. In addition, there are requirements for absorbance, TOC and microorganisms.
