Infineon Technologies Launches XENSIV™ TLE4972, a High-Precision Coreless Current Sensor for Automotive Applications
Munich, Germany - October 27, 2021 - Infineon Technologies AG introduces its first automotive current sensor, the new XENSIV™ TLE4972. This coreless current sensor uses Infineon's proven Hall technology for precise and stable current measurement. With its compact design and diagnostic mode, the TLE4972 is ideal for xEV applications such as traction inverters for hybrid and battery-powered vehicles, as well as for battery main switches.
Based on its unique temperature and stress compensation features, the TLE4972 offers state-of-the-art sensing technology and is immune to negative effects caused by magnetic cores. Due to its differential sensing structure, no magnetic core or shielding is required to protect the sensor from stray fields. The integrated EEPROM allows customization of the sensor for different applications and supports measurement ranges up to 2 kA.
To protect the system, the sensor has two independent output pins for overcurrent detection with a typical response time of less than 1µs. The customer can program the sensitivity as well as the overcurrent limit to adapt the sensor to the system requirements. In addition, the temperature drift of the sensitivity plus the offset is less than 1.6%.
Due to the magnetic induction principle, the sensor causes very low power losses. Therefore, it can be used as a versatile redundant solution for 400V or 800V battery main switches. The small PG-VSON-6 package enables a compact design, making the device ideal for traction inverters. The PG-TDSO-16 package is also available. Both packaged devices have been developed as independent safety units (Safety Element out of Context) according to ISO 26262 and can meet ASIL B safety requirements.
Availability
Samples of the XENSIV TLE4972-AE35D5 (PG-TDSO-16) are available now, and the TLE4972-AE35S5 (PG-VSON-6) will be available in early 2022. Volume production is scheduled to begin in early 2022.
