The US Consumer Electronics Show CES 2020 officially ended on January 10th local time. At this year's CES, 5G technology undoubtedly attracted more attention. With the gradual launch of large-scale commercial use of 5G around the world in 2019, the application of 5G is not only limited to mobile phones, but also expanded to computers, home appliances, smart wearables, automobiles and other fields, indicating that 5G will have a huge impact on the entire consumer electronics industry in the future.
A collective show of domestic 5G mobile phones
In 2019, operators in many countries around the world started 5G construction. At present, more than 50 countries have issued 5G licenses, 60+ 5G operators, and 40+ 5G commercial terminals. The development speed of 5G is unprecedented. Under the wave of 5G, Chinese mobile phone manufacturers want to take advantage of the momentum and take off, and CES is undoubtedly the best platform.
TCL 10 5G is TCL's first 5G phone this year. It uses Qualcomm's newly released Snapdragon 7 series 5G SoC and supports SA/NSA dual-mode. TCL said that with the arrival of a new generation of 5G phones, 2020 will usher in a real wave of 5G phone replacement, and the appearance of TCL 10 5G is precisely to keep up with the trend of the times.
TCL also released its new foldable phone, TCL Foldable. TCL Foldable uses a 7.2-inch 2K resolution flexible OLED screen and a color prism design on the back. Unlike the tri-fold prototype previously announced by TCL, the foldable phone released this time is a double-fold screen, which represents another step forward in TCL's exploration of flexible folding screens.
Coolpad released its latest 5G mobile phone Legacy at CES 2020. It supports 5G network and is priced at less than US$400 (equivalent to about RMB 2,776). It will be released in the US market sometime in the second quarter of this year.
Huawei phones cannot enter the US market, but Huawei 5G phones were still seen at CES 2020. The models on display included Huawei Mate X, Mate 30 5G series, etc., fully demonstrating Huawei's advantages in the field of 5G terminals.
Lenovo showcased the Motorola Razr, a phone that can be folded up and down, which can reduce the phone's size by half, greatly improving its portability. Liu Jun, executive vice president and president of the China region, said that the 5G version of the Motorola Razr will be available in the domestic market in the second quarter of 2020.
In addition, OnePlus released its first concept phone, OnePlus Concept One, actively trying new forms of mobile phone products. The surface of its rear camera uses an electrochromic glass technology to achieve a "hidden rear camera" design, which is eye-catching among a number of mobile phones with protruding rear cameras.
If 2019 is the first year of 5G, then 2020 will be the year of popularization of 5G mobile phones. Research organization GFK released a 2020 mobile phone market outlook report and forecasted that 2020 will become a special time window for the global mobile phone market, and the second half of the year will enter the fast lane of development. GFK predicts that the global 5G mobile phone market retail volume will reach 170 million units in 2020, and the retail volume of 5G mobile phones in China will reach 110 million units, accounting for 65% of the global 5G mobile phone retail volume.
Judging from this trend, Chinese mobile phone brands will play an important role in the application and popularization of 5G.
PC and PAD are involved in 5G
Not only 5G mobile phones, but also PCs and PADs have been affected by 5G commercialization.
At CES 2020, Lenovo launched the world's first 5G PC: Yoga 5G. This is a personal computer equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx 5G computing platform, which expands 5G connectivity from smartphones to high-end computing. The device can provide download speeds of about 4Gb/s. Another PC manufacturer, Dell, also demonstrated a two-in-one Latitude 9510 laptop focused on business applications, which is also a notebook that supports 5G networks. The 15-inch Latitude 9510 only has a Qualcomm X55 baseband and supports 6Ghz 5G networks. HP Elite Dragonfly is also a notebook that supports 5G networks. This will be HP's first 5G-enabled business laptop and is expected to be available in September this year.
MSI exhibited a 5G-enabled MEG Aegis Ti5 gaming console at the exhibition. The reason why this console can support 5G mobile networks and access the Internet at high speed without network cables or WiFi is that it has a built-in Qualcomm X55 5G baseband that supports global 3G, 4G, and 5G networks. In addition to mobile networks, it is also equipped with Intel i225G 2.5G LAN and i219V 1G LAN, as well as AX201 WiFi 6 wireless network card. The combination of multiple networking methods ensures smooth network access anytime, anywhere.
At CES 2020, Samsung showcased the Galaxy Tab S6, the world's first tablet device that supports 5G networks. It is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, a 10.5-inch WQXGA SAMOLED screen, a body size of 244.5*159.5*5.7mm, and a built-in 7040mAh capacity battery that supports 15 hours of continuous video playback.
Overall, in consumer products, the support of 5G has enriched the terminal application forms, but the birth of killer applications will still take some time.
