Powerful in-car imaging, video and wireless capabilities demonstrated at 2014 CES
Beijing, China, January 10, 2014 – QNX Software Systems Ltd., a global leader in software platforms for automotive electronics, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), today announced support for the high-performance video and imaging capabilities of Snapdragon automotive solutions on the QNX CAR Platform for Infotainment, a comprehensive, standards-based solution for building connected infotainment systems.
This is the first deployment of a complete Snapdragon automotive solution and was demonstrated at CES 2014 in a QNX reference car – a specially modified Jeep Wrangler.
Snapdragon automotive solutions include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 602A application processor, which supports high-resolution, sophisticated graphics and human-machine interfaces, facial recognition, gesture recognition and voice recognition, high-quality audio processing and image stitching, and a variety of high-definition displays and cameras. Qualcomm Gobi™ 3G/4G LTE modems bring industry-standard multi-mode cellular network connectivity, and Qualcomm VIVE provides leading in-vehicle wireless and Bluetooth connectivity. This powerful combination enables the next generation of connected infotainment experiences, from complex user applications to enhanced 3D navigation to rear-seat 3D games. In the QNX reference car exhibited at CES, the Snapdragon automotive solution builds a digital instrument panel and multimedia host based on the QNX CAR infotainment system platform. Host applications include advanced 3D maps, natural speech recognition, positioning, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and cloud-based in-vehicle data analysis.
“By combining Qualcomm Technologies’ expertise in mobile communications and application processors with QNX Software Systems’ broad support for mobile application environments including Android, OpenGL ES and HTML5, we can help automakers deploy rich mobile applications across their product lines, delivering a transformative connected infotainment system experience to their end customers,” said Nakul Duggal, vice president of product management at Qualcomm Technologies.
“We are very pleased to be working with Qualcomm Technologies to expand the automotive infotainment market,” said Derek Kuhn, vice president of sales and marketing at QNX Software Systems. “The high level of integration provided by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 602A processor will enable automotive companies to achieve significant cost savings while taking advantage of the rich graphics and HMI capabilities of the QNX CAR Platform for Infotainment.”
QNX software system technology has been widely used in tens of millions of in-vehicle systems around the world, including 3D navigation systems, multimedia hosts, digital instrument clusters, connectivity modules, and hands-free systems. The unique pre-integrated technology of the QNX CAR Infotainment Application Platform helps reduce the development work of creating connected, multimedia infotainment systems and accelerates product launch. The platform is highly flexible and provides customers with a wide range of choices in application environments, smartphone platforms, user interface technologies, and connectivity standards.
