Wi-Fi 6
has been around for a while and is of course widely used to connect personal devices.
Wi-Fi 6
is now ready to power a host of IoT connectivity use cases.
In order to understand
the advantages of
Wi-Fi 6
in the context of the Internet of Things,
Silicon Labs
(also known as
"
Silicon Technology
"
) recently held a
Tech Talks
-
Wi-Fi
series of technical lectures
online
. The first theme of this series is:
Wi-Fi 6
Benefits for IoT Applications
(
Wi-Fi 6 Benefits for IoT Applications
)
,
lectured by
Ravi Subramanian,
Technical Marketing Director
of Silicon Labs
, and specially invited to
host
Claus Hetting
, CEO and Chairman of
Wi-Fi NOW
people
.
It was mentioned during the meeting that
Wi-Fi 6
has begun to be used for a large number of personal connection use cases, and the standard has been successfully accepted by billions of personal devices.
Wi-Fi 6
is now expanding into IoT connectivity
as the density of IoT devices increases and the need to support low-power (battery-powered) devices in homes and industries grows.

Ravi Subramanian,
Director of Technical Marketing
at Silicon Labs
Advantages of Wi-Fi 6
for IoT include
predictable high-density multi-user capabilities
with
OFDMA
and
MU-MIMO
, longer battery life for devices using Target Wake Time (
TWT
), and better coverage.
All features of
Wi-Fi 6
extensively expand
the capabilities
of Wi-Fi
for
IoT
design.
Ravi
said
Wi-Fi 6
is now ready for the mass-market Internet of Things.
TWT
allows clients to negotiate with the access point how long they can sleep. This is
a further shift from
Wi-Fi
4
, where devices were unable to negotiate their sleep times and had to rely on
the DTIM
set by the access point
. With
the advent of the
Wi-Fi 6
standard, each device can independently negotiate their wake times, allowing them to sleep longer even in crowded environments.
At the same time, the performance of IoT devices has been greatly improved.
“Wi-Fi 6
has
features such as
OFDMA
,
MU-MIMO
and
BSS Coloring
that allow devices to use the network efficiently by being able to carry payloads from multiple devices simultaneously, thus avoiding collisions and interference and supporting greater network capacity.
"Ravi
further explained.
