After 10 years of record sales, combined revenues for optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discrete semiconductors are expected to fall 6% in the pandemic-plagued 2020, according to IC insights’ latest OSD report.
At the beginning of 2020, global conditions indicated that the market growth rates for optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete semiconductors (collectively referred to as OSD devices) would reach single digits this year, but the outlook for the first quarter suddenly deteriorated due to the global outbreak of the covid-19 coronavirus. By the end of March, the virus crisis had intensified, causing IC Insights to lower its 2020 forecast for the semiconductor industry and change the growth outlook for the next five years. The revised forecast is contained in IC Insights’ new 2020 OSD Report, which provides market analysis and forecasts for optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discretes. The report shows that total OSD sales fell 6% this year, ending a decade of record annual sales (Figure 1).

The new OSD report’s semiconductor forecast model assumes that the virus pandemic is contained by mid-2020 and that a gradual shift in product markets occurs in the second half of the year and in 2021. Total OSD sales are now expected to fall to $80.9 billion in 2020. Based on IC Insights’ preliminary 2020 OSD market forecast, the new forecast would reduce sales by about $9.1 billion from the level before the outlook was revised downward in late March (Figure 2). However, the new forecast shows that total OSD sales will rebound in 2021, with sales increasing 9% to a record high of $88.1 billion.

According to the OSD report, both optoelectronics and sensors/actuators hit record highs in 2019. Optoelectronics sales increased 9% to $44.1 billion in 2019, while the sensor/actuator market, which typically flies at high speeds, grew only about 1% to $14.9 billion. Discrete device sales ended three consecutive years of growth and fell 0.9% in 2019 to $27.1 billion.

Forecasts in the new report show that optoelectronics sales fell about 6% to $41.7 billion in 2020; the sensor/actuator market fell 4% to $14.2 billion; and discrete device product revenue fell 8% to $25 billion this year. IC Insights expects optoelectronics and sensor/actuator sales to rebound about 10% in 2021, reaching new highs of $45.8 billion and $15.7 billion, respectively. Discrete device sales are expected to increase 7% in 2021 to $26.7 billion, but will not set a new record until 2022.
