Advanced compression technologies are replacing previous generations, providing better data stream performance, higher compression ratios for a given quality, and lower latency. JPEG 2000 has been widely adopted as the standard for digital cinema in the military, medical imaging, and surveillance. H.264 is expected to replace MPEG-2 in broadcast television, MPEG-4 Part 2 in video surveillance systems, and H.263 in video conferencing. Even as these new compression solutions are deployed, ongoing standardization work continues to enhance the H.264 and JPEG 2000 standards.
