A doubly salient hybrid excitation generator (DSHEG) with parallel structure is introduced. The structure of the generator is explained, and the corresponding mathematical model is established. A voltage regulator that can realize bidirectional control of the excitation current is proposed for the hybrid excitation generator. The excitation current is adjusted to achieve the stable output of the generator. Three power generation modes of DSHEG are introduced, and the working principle of the bipolar control strategy to adjust the excitation current and the influence of the control loop parameters on the output voltage regulation are analyzed; three power generation working modes of DSHEG are proposed, and their respective characteristics are analyzed. The power generation and voltage regulation test results of the developed voltage regulator prototype show that the developed voltage regulator realizes the control of bidirectional excitation, has good steady-state and dynamic voltage regulation performance, and can be extended to other forms of hybrid excitation generators.
