Abstract: Applications involving 2-wire buses such as I²C or SMBus™ require a trade-off between parameters such as rise time, power consumption, and noise immunity. The rise time of such an open-drain bus from a low-to-high transition is determined by the pull-up resistors and bus capacitance, so it is difficult to maintain a clean and fast rising edge as peripherals, trace lengths, and connectors are added. To address the rise time issue, this application note proposes a rise time acceleration circuit that provides a simple way to speed up the rising edge, improve noise immunity, and reduce power consumption.
