The design of offline power supplies involves a lot of knowledge in electronic engineering, including analog and digital circuits, characteristics of bipolar transistors and MOSFET power devices, magnetics, thermal considerations, safety requirements, and stability of control loops. Making complex choices between so many design variables is a huge challenge. Therefore, even for engineers who are experts in this field, developing a new offline power supply is often tedious and time-consuming. This application note introduces a simple and efficient design method for offline power supplies based on TOPSwitch-GX. Regarding TOPSwitch-GX flyback design, PowerIntegrations recommends using PI Expert for design. The software also provides a knowledge base and optimizes the selection of key parameters, which can further shorten the design time.
