        Semiconductor lasers and optical amplifiers are very sensitive to reflected light from connectors, splices, filters, etc., which can cause performance degradation. Therefore, an optical isolator is needed to block the reflected light. An optical isolator is a passive optical device that only allows one-way light to pass through. Its working principle is based on the non-reciprocity of Faraday rotation. Figure 1 shows the structure and working principle of an optical isolator.
