The RT9603 is a high frequency, dual MOSFET driversspecifically designed to drive two power N-ChannelMOSFETs in a synchronous-rectified buck convertertopology. The device combined with the RT924x seriesof multi-phase PWM controllers and MOSFETs form acomplete core voltage regulator solution for advancedmicroprocessors. The output drivers in the RT9603 can efficiently switchpower MOSFETs at frequencies up to 500kHz. It shall betaken into account the thermal consideration when theswitching frequency above 500kHz. Each driver iscapable of driving a 3nF load in 30/40ns rise/fall time withfast propagation delay from input transition to the gate ofthe power MOSFET. The device implements bootstrappingon the upper gate with only an external capacitorand a diode required. This reduces implementationcomplexity and allows the use of higher performance, cost effective N-Channel MOSFETs.Both drivers incorporate adaptive shoot-through protectionto prevent upper and lower MOSFETs from conductingsimultaneously and shorting the input supply. An unique feature of the RT9603 driver is the addition ofover-voltage protection in the event of upper MOSFETdirect shorted before power-on. The RT9603 detects thefault condition during initial start-up, the internal poweronOVP sense circuitry will rapidly drive the output lowerMOSFET on before the multi-phase PWM controller takescontrol. As a result, the input supply will latch into theshutdown state, thereby prevent the processor fromdamaged.
